Transition coaching
Transition coaching for expats in Berlin
I am Stella, an ICF Professional Certified Coach in Berlin. My work is transition coaching: career change, relocation, the move from study into work, and the identity shifts that come with them. This page is for the internationals and expats I work with, who are rebuilding a life in a country that is not the one they grew up in.
I have done this more than once myself. I grew up between languages, studied in the United States, worked in California, and rebuilt my routines again in Europe. Every time, the paperwork was the easy part. What took longer was the quiet internal reorganisation that nobody else sees.
What actually gets hard after a move
Most relocation advice is logistical. Visa, flat, insurance, Anmeldung. Useful, and not the thing that keeps people up at night. What people bring to me is usually this:
- Every routine broke at once. The systems that held your life together were built for a different city, a different commute, a different social rhythm.
- Competence does not transfer cleanly. You were fluent and senior somewhere else. Here you are re-explaining yourself, sometimes in a second or third language.
- Belonging takes longer than expected. You can build a functional life in months and still feel like a guest in it.
- Career change and relocation collide. Two transitions at once, each making the other harder to think about clearly.
- Distance from the people who knew you. Your context and your history are somewhere else, and you are explaining yourself from scratch.
How I work with this
We start by separating the strands, because relocation stress usually arrives as one undifferentiated weight. Then we rebuild structure deliberately: what your week actually needs to hold, what can wait, and what you have been carrying out of habit rather than necessity.
We also take the cross-cultural part seriously rather than treating it as background noise. Translating yourself between cultures is real work. So is deciding which parts of how you were raised you want to keep, and which were never yours to begin with.
Practical details
Sessions are online, worldwide, over Google Meet or Zoom, so this works whether you are in Berlin, elsewhere in Germany, or still deciding whether to come. I coach in English and Mandarin, both native. Everything starts with a 30-minute first consultation.
This is one doorway into the same work. Whether or not relocation is part of your picture, if you are standing in the middle of a change that has not resolved yet, that is what I coach. You can also see the full practice →
